Our Worship
At Lindley Community Church we basically have a traditional, non-liturgical, non-Charismatic worship service. We use a standard hymnal, and have a choir and a variety of soloists and small ensembles. We allow liberty in the use of modern English translations of the Bible.
We are fundamentally a Christian church, which means that we are committed to preaching the central message of the Christian faith, the message of salvation in Christ Jesus. This message, or the “gospel,” may be summarized as follows:
- Our situation: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23). We are not mere accidents of evolution, but were created by God in His image and are therefore obligated to do His will. Sin is disobedience to God, and as human beings we are all sinners by nature. Therefore we are all guilty in the sight of God.
- Our options: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23). Sin results in death. First there is spiritual death, in which we are separated from God and have no relationship with Him; then physical death at the end of our earthly life; and finally eternal death, in which we spend eternity in hell away from the presence of God. But God offers us another option, eternal life, which is available in Christ Jesus.
- God’s provision: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). Even though God is holy and just, and must punish sin, He is also loving. The solution is for Him to provide a substitute Who can take the punishment we deserve. This is what Jesus did when He died on the cross. His is the Son of God, both God and man, and His death is an atoning sacrifice that pays for our sins.
- We must ask God to forgive us: “For the Scripture says, ‘Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.’ For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For ‘Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’” (Romans 10:11-13). In order to be forgiven we must ask for forgiveness. To “call upon the name of the Lord” means to pray to God, usually to ask for help. This in turn implies that we have faith in Him, that we believe that He is both willing and able to save us if we ask Him to.
- We must tell others: “…if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9,10). To become a Christian and receive the forgiveness of our sins, we must make Christ our personal Savior. We must believe in Him and trust in Him with our heart, and we must publicly confess that faith.
If you do not know Christ as your personal Savior, we invite you to do so now. If you have any questions, we urge you to contact the church and our pastor will be glad to help you.
